2 Days in Cappadocia – A Perfect Weekend Itinerary

Only have a weekend or two days to explore Cappadocia? No worries – with smart planning, you can still experience the region’s highlights, from iconic fairy chimneys to the unforgettable hot air balloon ride.

Here’s how to make the most of your two days in Cappadocia, assuming you arrive early on Day 1 and leave by the evening of Day 2.

Day 1: Balloons, valleys & culture

Sunrise Hot air balloon ride (optional)

If your budget allows, start your trip on a literal high with a sunrise hot air balloon ride. You’ll be picked up around 4:30–5:00 AM.

It’s magical to be floating above the fairy chimneys as the sun rises. Dozens of balloons drift over Göreme, offering panoramic views of the surreal landscape. It’s early, but the experience is worth it. Book the Sunrise Hot Air Balloon ride

Morning: Göreme, Paşabağ & Devrent

After ballooning (or after breakfast), it’s time to start exploring. Head to the Göreme Open-Air Museum and spend about 1.5 hours admiring its ancient rock-cut churches and colorful frescoes.

Next, go to Paşabağ (Monks Valley) to wander among the famous mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys. Then, swing by Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley) for a quick photo stop among whimsical rock formations shaped like animals and objects.

Lunch in Avanos

Head to Avanos for a well-deserved lunch. At a traditional restaurant, try local favorites like lentil soup, gözleme, or succulent kebabs.

Don’t miss a visit to a pottery workshop – this town is known for its clay art. Watching artisans work or trying the wheel yourself is a great way to connect with Cappadocia’s culture.

Afternoon: Ürgüp & Local wine

In the afternoon, drive to Ürgüp and check out the photogenic Three Graces (Üç Güzeller) fairy chimneys with Mount Erciyes in the backdrop – perfect for photos.

If you’re into wine, make a quick stop at Turasan Winery in Ürgüp for a tasting of regional varietals.

Sunset: ATV tour or sunset point

If possible, join an ATV sunset tour. You’ll be picked up around 5 PM for a two-hour guided ride through scenic valleys like Rose and Love Valley. The tour wraps up with sunset views from a hilltop – adventurous and beautiful!

Evening: Dinner & night stroll

Wrap up your first day with dinner at a traditional cave restaurant in Göreme. For a special treat, be sure to pre-order the Testi Kebabı (pottery stew).

If you have energy left after dinner, stroll through Göreme’s charming streets. Pick up souvenirs or enjoy a glass of local wine under the stars. Rest well—another exciting day awaits.

Insider Tip: Almost everything suggested for day 1’s itinerary (except the ATV tour) is included in a popular Cappadocia tour called The Red Tour. If you don’t want to bother about logistics and want someone to guide you, we suggest this stress-free way to enjoy Cappadocia. The tour includes lunch and entry tickets.

Day 2: Underground Cities & Ihlara Valley

Morning: Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı underground city

Day 2 begins with a journey underground. Hire a driver, join the Green Tour, or self-drive to either Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı Underground City (they open around 8:30–9:00 AM). These ancient subterranean cities are a maze of tunnels, rooms, and passages. Spend around an hour here – a local guide is highly recommended to make sense of the incredible history.

Midday: Ihlara Valley hike

From the underground city, drive to Ihlara Valley (about 1 hour away). If you’re with a tour, your hike will likely start from Ihlara village. If on your own, consider entering from Belisırma for a shorter hike.

Walk along the riverside trail, soaking in the peaceful vibe, the sound of the Melendiz River, and the cool shade of poplars. You’ll also find painted cave churches tucked into the cliffs – even a short 1–2 km hike is refreshing and scenic.

Lunch: Riverside dining in Belisırma

It’s time for a relaxing lunch. Belisırma village has quaint restaurants with tables on platforms right over the river. Enjoy grilled fish or Turkish pancakes with your feet almost in the water—a refreshing break amid nature.

Afternoon: Selime Monastery & return

Continue to Selime Monastery at the end of the valley. This massive rock-cut complex looks like a stone cathedral carved into the cliffs. Climb into its chambers and enjoy sweeping views of the valley. Spend around 30 minutes exploring.

Start your return journey to Göreme or Ürgüp. On the way, stop at Uçhisar Castle if time permits. Even from the base, the panoramic views are lovely. You can also drop by Pigeon Valley – stop at the Uçhisar end to see the cliffs filled with pigeon holes and maybe feed a few birds.

Evening: A memorable farewell

It’s your last night in Cappadocia. For a festive farewell, consider attending a Turkish Night dinner show – complete with folk music, whirling dervishes, and traditional dancing.

If you prefer a peaceful end, enjoy dinner at a rooftop restaurant in Göreme, admiring the glowing cave hotels under the night sky. Sip on Cappadocian wine or warm Turkish tea. If time allows before your departure, you can browse a carpet shop or simply enjoy a quiet evening stroll.
